A Needle In A Haystack…

In Recommendations on January 26, 2010 at 3:32 pm

One of Boston’s local stations reported last night that the number of people employed in Massachusetts is lower now, in 2010, than it was in 2000. This hasn’t happened, the anchor said, since several decades before The Great Depression. Obviously, there are many factors that need to be considered along with this statistic. (Were there companies headquartered in the state that are no longer? How much can be attributed to outsourcing, advances in technology, and the sluggish economies of the Labor Day 2008  crashes and the September 11 attacks? How has the population of the Commonwealth changed in the past 10 years? Etc.)

But one thing is clear: There are a lot more of us out there fighting for an even lesser number of jobs. Translation: Job Search factors that used to be enough (a concise resume, a spiffy cover letter, a network of well-connected people, follow-up) are no longer enough to cut through the pack (in past times, a smaller one) and get me hired–or even get me an interview. Similar to how inbound marketing has evolved into the new and effective form of marketing, I’m hoping this proactive attempt at a job search will get me noticed in that virtual stack of high-piled resumes.

The point of For Hire is to brand myself beyond the credentials of my 1-plus page resume. We’ll say it’s like a social media interview. I’m going to mesh my creativity, skills, experience, insight, thoughts, and passion for new media into this space.

Enough of my words for the moment; here are words of recommendation from some of my past colleagues (Source: My LinkedIn profile):
